To the eyes of many, the young men living in Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella remain invisible; figures on the margins of Europe’s urban landscape, caught in the long aftermath of migration and separation.
Many have spent years away from their families, their mothers, and the daily gestures of care that sustain emotional wellbeing.
In this fragile environment, the absence of maternal presence is felt as both an individual ache and a collective wound.
Mama enters this space as a quiet act of resistance. Nearly every day, she visits the park to check on her “sons,” offering warmth where the system offers neglect. Her presence – listening, joking, embracing – recreates, however briefly, the sense of belonging
denied by bureaucratic borders. In her care, love becomes political: an assertion that tenderness, empathy, and community are forms of survival.
Through her gestures, Mama restores visibility to those rendered unseen, challenging the indifference that surrounds migrant life. Her role transcends charity; it is an act of solidarity that reclaims humanity from the structures that divide families and fracture hope.
